It's time to push the couch around...

I basically grew up in a house that was built in the 1920's...a sturdy stone Beaux Arts of a home, with georgous woodwork, built-ins and wrought iron that would sustain a massive attack on the castle.

It also had radiators.

My favorite choice of heating.

Radiators provide non dry heat and are usually placed under the windows to take advantage of the cold draft, heat it and send it through the house. It's excellent for your skin, and furntiure. It also provided shelf space because of the large box like covers that would fit over the radiators...sometimes they were a piece of craftsmanship to be admired, sometimes just a great place to put books, photos of the family and the paperweight collection that nobody knew what to do with...and I miss that.

If you lived in a house with radiators , you also knew the fun of moving the furniture with the seasons...furniture was moved away during the late fall so the radiators could, well, radiate...then in the late spring, the furniture was moved back so you could cover the unsightly coils with couch. I liked that "musical chairs/ furniture" concept...rotate, sit, seasons change, rotate, sit....I do it now in my 1930's house. THe living room is re-arranged every late fall and every late spring. In the fall it signifies the Christmas tree coming soon and the furniture circles the fireplace.

It's kinda funny.

It also means there is a serious house cleaning and the rug under the couch is finally vacuumed. So that's what happened to all those Lego pieces....

But that's not the funny part.

The funny part is, I don't have radiator heat.

Start the music , I'm pushing the couch around...

Uncle Johnny's Bail Money

When I was about 15 years old, I was futzing around (is futzing a word?) in the dining room , actually I think I was nosing around , no, probably fidgeting while my mother was lecturing me on the virtues of not hanging out in front of the Pizza Shop at the shopping center ( a treasured teenage congregating point)…I think her words were…”Boys don’t ask girls out who hang out at the Pizza Shop..they know you are always available, you’ll never get a Saturday night date doing that”.

I pondered that one, for a teenage second, wondering if that meant I could actually start dating.

As she was telling me this, my young mind started wandering along with my feet, I started circling, pacing about the dining room ,doing the teenage avoid-eye-contact-at-all-costs, trying to keep my mind off the lecture and wondering how soon I could go to the Pizza Shop.

I pass by the soup tureen. The soup tureen, that big honkin’ piece of silver status that never held an ounce of soup in all my days on this earth, ever.

I casually lifted the lid up off the big silver baby and holy Sonny and Cher, inside it was a roll of cash ( I later counted it, 500 clams)….

I looked up at my mom, who was cautiously looking at me, and said “Wow look at all this money, what’s this money for?”

Of course my mind is racing, is she leaving frumpy step father? Is she saving for an operation? Is this for me? Are we getting a pool? Can I come back later and peel off a few twenties that she would never ,never notice?

Racing I tell you, racing.

She answered succinctly and with a finality that meant, no more questions, “That’s Uncle Johnny’s bail money, don’t touch it.”

I put the lid back as if it was radioactive and left the room. I had completely forgotten about the Pizza Shop and started walking to the door and outside to sit under the trees in the yard.

Uncle Johnny, a name that evoked danger, darkness and omigod do I really have his errant DNA?

He drove a ’63 corvette and wrecked almost every Saturday night, he was wild and scary, he made stealth trips to …FLORIDA...he told us he sold acid at Woodstock and I always wondered if it was the BAD acid that Wavy Gravy warned about ….and what the heck is bail money?

Curious beyond belief, I rode my Schwinn up to the shopping center, past the coveted Pizza Shop and to the library where I look up (um by the way, this is the 70’s) the words “ bail money”…. Or “bail”…seems that wad of cash was there to secure a quick release from jail for scary Uncle Johnny.
Since we are talking the 70’s, automatic teller machines hadn’t been invented yet, keeping cash hidden in the house was the way to go.
And bail money is usually needed at 2:30 am never during banking hours…and by the way, the other definition for bail was “a container used to remove water from a boat” something to save a sinking ship perhaps?…hmmm.

So I was RIGHT…Uncle Johnny was not only scary but illegal! There was something not-quite-right about his trips to FLORIDA. I knew it! He had seen jail…touched criminals, walked the perp walk, omigod again…..or not, because of the bail money.

Now here’s were we get to the point of the whole story…don’t you just pray for this moment?

The point is, here I am , over 36 years later… sitting in my sunporch writing this ,while 2 plumbers dig a massive trench from our house to the gas line, which decided to die and leak gas into the air which I smelled last night and made the phone call that started a VERY EXPENSIVE CHAIN OF EVENTS.

But I don’t get too spastic, because I learned early on, from my mother, to be prepared, to save a little cash in the soup tureen in case Uncle Johnny gets thrown in jail…or a gas line needs to be repaired.

And THAT is the point of this story.

Wormburners deluxe...

This is how we roll in the burgh.
Brilliant move of Mr.Higinbotham (I loved typing this name) to yell "Fore!"...it's the only way to get a golfer to pay attention.....

A serious drive at Cloverleaf
Wednesday, September 24, 2008
By Sadie Gurman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Golf was mixed with traces of NASCAR yesterday when a speeding SUV carrying five golfers zipped across fairways, slammed into a pine tree, spun around and burst into flames.
Dave Higinbotham watched the scene in horror from the third hole of the third nine of Delmont's Cloverleaf Golf Course. The SUV, he said, rushed up a hill, heading straight toward him at 50 mph.
It missed him, instead grazing his golf cart before zooming up the hill toward the tee of the fourth hole.
"I yelled as loud as I could yell, 'Fore, fore, fore!' " said Mr. Higinbotham, of Greensburg, who looked on as the SUV struck an oak tree and careened into a pine tree. It was the final stop on a crash course that sent five people to hospitals and golfers on a year-end outing scrambling for cover.
Mr. Higinbotham, 66, ran up the hill toward the fiery SUV, dialing 911 on his cell phone and shouting for his playing partners to help.
"I said, 'We've got to get these people out of the car,' " he said. Fellow golfers quickly joined Mr. Higinbotham, some in golf carts. "We pulled them out as gently as we could, then laid them on the ground."
Driver Paul Lazear, 82, and his four passengers, all from Wilkinsburg, were safe, but 2-foot flames still shot from SUV, Mr. Higinbotham said.
"I said, 'We've got to push this car out of the way, and away from these people,' " he said.
He and six other golfers started pushing, sliding the burning vehicle about 30 feet before emergency crews arrived and could treat the injured.
Mr. Lazear and passenger Carol Lazear, 72, were taken with minor injuries to Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital at Jeannette, state police said. Two other passengers, Ruth Daniels, 83, and Flora Lee Katz, 74, suffered moderate injuries and were treated at Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg. A fifth passenger, Bertram Katz, 80, was flown to UPMC Presbyterian in Oakland. State police said all of the injured were expected to recover.
Mr. Lazear told police that he'd "lost his brakes and couldn't stop." His collision course started in the course's north parking lot, where police said he hit a parked car and kept driving, first across some large stones and then onto the golf course. He picked up speed as he headed west across the first hole of the first nine's tee box, and continued, just missing the clubhouse as he veered onto a path and back into the parking lot.
Mr. Lazear didn't stop there. He told police he couldn't.
They said he crossed Cloverleaf Drive through the south parking lot and again onto the golf course, gaining speed. Heading north, the SUV jumped a ditch and kept going, hitting a parked golf cart at the third hole of the third nine.
Pressing on, police said, the SUV hit an oak tree, then went out of control before "bouncing off" a pine tree and spinning in a circle. The vehicle stopped there, police said, completely in flames.
"It was burnt to an ashen shell," said Leonard Manns, who works in the pro shop and didn't see the crash but was told of it later. "It was freaky, that's for sure."
He said the fire left only a charred spot on the course.

Alleged weed whacker attacker faces hearing
Thursday, June 26, 2008
By Jim McKinnon, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A Westmoreland County man faces misdemeanor charges that he attacked his neighbor with a gas-powered grass and weed trimmer last month in Southwest Greensburg.
The victim, William Bell of Sewickley Street, suffered a cut on his hand that he told police was caused by the plastic twine on the trimmer wielded by his neighbor, Gary Wright.
Mr. Wright, 67, is charged with reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and two counts of simple assault.
He remains free on $10,000 bond, pending a preliminary hearing Aug. 7 before District Judge Joseph R. DeMarchis in Jeannette.
Mr. Bell drove to the Southwest Greensburg police station at 7:20 p.m. May 23 to report the attack and to display his injury. He also carried the spool and twine from the trimmer to show the officers.
He said Mr. Wright had ignored his demand to keep off the Bell property while trimming the grass on the Wright property.
As Mr. Bell approached his neighbor, Mr. Wright wielded the trimmer, running at full speed, and lashed out at Mr. Bell, according to a police affidavit.
Mr. Bell's neighbors from across the street corroborated the victim's version of events.
Mr. Wright arrived a short time later at the police station to complain that Mr. Bell had destroyed his weed whacker.
During the confrontation, Mr. Bell grabbed the tool and tossed it into an alley, the affidavit said.
Mr. Wright denied that he had been on the Bell property.

Standoff ends in East Hills as gunman found asleep
Tuesday, June 17, 2008
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A man was arrested late last night in an East Hills apartment after a standoff with police.
Police went to the 2200 block of East Hills Drive after residents reported a man with a gun wandering in the neighborhood about 9:50 p.m..
While police were waiting for the SWAT squad to arrive, a woman came out of the building and told police her 3-year-old child was in the bathtub in the apartment.
Fearing for the child's safety, police forced their way in and took three children to safety, said Lt. Richard Pritchard.
They found the suspect asleep and recovered a handgun. The man, who gave police several different names, was arrested.

The Measure of a Man...

The yardstick hasn't been invented with which to measure the content of this man's character. He now lives in glory, having died in victory.

I am saddened by the loss of him from this planet, however, I am lifted by his life's deeds.

You dig deep and see if you have half the courage of this young man, I am sure I don't. I will forever be in awe of Army Pfc..Ross McGinnis.

I know this is no comfort to his parents, yes he did die young, but he lived beyond us all. To see through his eyes, to know his heart would've been a lesson we all could learn.

Thank you Ross.

Retrofitted truck used to steal diesel fuel from gas station
Thursday, May 29, 2008
By Jim McKinnon, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
This photo from a surveillance camera shows the truck and trailer suspected in the fuel thefts.
Talk about a gas guzzler.
Police believe an Ohio asphalt contractor used a retrofitted pickup truck and trailer to steal thousands of gallons of diesel fuel from a Mercer County gas station.
Heritage Deputy Police Chief Edward Holiga said yesterday that the truck and trailer were used in three thefts dating to last year.
He said the truck was parked above the BP gas underground storage tanks at a convenience store. The trailer was rigged with a trap door along with rubber flaps to conceal the operation.
Someone inside the trailer would siphon diesel fuel from the storage tanks using the pickup truck's engine as a vacuum to pump it into a rigged propane tank inside the trailer.
The last incident was reported April 28. All three incidents were captured on surveillance cameras.
Acting on a tip, police found the pickup and trailer on the property of Larry Donaldson, owner of a small asphalt and trucking company in rural Trumbull County.
Officers observed the truck and trailer around 7 p.m. Tuesday on the property. Armed with a search warrant early yesterday morning, Heritage officers and Trumbull County sheriff's deputies found a wall of straw from the ceiling to the floor of the trailer. It concealed a wooden partition, behind which officers found the siphoning apparatus, along with an empty propane cylinder about 15 feet long. According to Chief Holiga, the tank smelled of diesel fuel.
Officers searching Mr. Donaldson's property found numerous fuel tanks, including a 5,000-gallon storage hold with about 500 gallons of diesel fuel inside.
At least $4,500 worth of diesel fuel was reported stolen after the convenience store checked its electronic measuring devices, police said.
No charges have been filed but authorities continue to investigate.

Mother, 42, wins Iron City hot dog eating championship
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
A 42-year-old mother of two from Maryland downed 29 hotdogs in 10 minutes yesterday to win the Iron City hot dog eating championship.
Juliet Lee, who weighs 105 pounds, bested competitors named Steak-bellie and Wing Kong for the title in Greensburg. They may have had the names but she had the cred: She is nationally ranked in competitive eating.
She will compete in the Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest at Coney Island on July 4.

PinHeads of the Week Award

This shining example of diminished mental capacity made a 2 year old child sick by smoking crack in the same room. Her demented rationalization was that she didn't think it would affect him "because he was sleeping".

A second PinHead award goes to the actual mother of the child, a pillar of maternal love, who allowed her son to be in the company of this lowlife. Ironically the mother's last name is McCracken.

Two PinHeads for the price of one, like shooting fish in a cup.

House party

In Allegheny county we have a real estate web site where they post your house, it's market and assessed value, and also a picture.

The wreck you see above is what they posted as Invisi-Gal's house.

Silly, of course it's not really MY house, it's the crack house down the road...love the upside down crack boat in the front yard!

My husband wants to call the county and have them put the correct picture up, I argue the point that we should keep that picture on the site, I like the sympathy it generates.

I see a city and I want to paint it black...

Is anyone doing this?

As far as I know, Pittsburgh isn't involved...that doesn't mean much, we only become relevant when there's an election, and then we fade to black. Hey, maybe we are involved afterall...

Anyway, it sounds like an interesting endeavor.

However, won't there be a big honkin' brown-out when everyone turns their lights back on at 9pm, therefore defeating the purpose?

Study details local male-female pay gap for professionals
Monday, March 03, 2008
By Dan Fitzpatrick, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The pay gap between male and female professionals in the Pittsburgh area exceeds the national average, according to a study released today by the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Social and Urban Research.
Local women earned just 58.3 percent of the national median earnings of women in management. Men in for-profit management positions, meanwhile, earned more than men nationally.
The study authors also found that Pittsburgh's industries are more segregated by gender than the rest of the country and most of the 100 largest metropolitan areas.
